7 Things To Know About The TEAS 7

Some schools will accept the TEAS 6 as well as TEAS 7 for a transitional period.

TEAS 7 is rolling out in June 2022, however, many schools will accept TEAS 6 scores for a period of time.

Not every school will accept the TEAS 6 and not every school will have the same length of a transitional period. Each program is different so be sure to specifically check with your program.

There are new types of questions – it’s not just multiple choice anymore!

Traditionally, the TEAS exam has always featured multiple choice questions, however, the TEAS 7 is rolling out a few different question types that will appear on the exam along with multiple choice questions. While the exam will primarily have multiple choice questions, there will be four new question types.

  • Ordered Response – students will have to order data in a particular order such as least to greatest.
  • Select All That Apply – students will have to select all options that apply to the question being asked.
  • Fill in the Blank – students will have to type out the correct answer into a blank answer box, no answer choices will be provided.
  • Clickable Areas – students will be presented with an image or diagram and they will have to “click” the correct answer on the image.

Here is an example of a new question type called “Order Response” that you’ll encounter in the math section.

There is a little less A&P and a little bit more chemistry and biology in the science section.

Formally, the TEAS 6 featured 32 questions on A&P out of 47 total questions in the science section. The TEAS 7 Science section includes a total of 44 questions:

  • 18 A&P Questions
  • 9 Scientific Reasoning Questions
  • 9 Biology Questions
  • 8 Chemistry Questions

Students taking the TEAS 7 should be able to answer questions on topics ranging from the hormones in the endocrine system, the blood flow through the cardiovascular system, acids and bases, the types of chemical reactions and solutions, applying the scientific method, and how cellular reproduction works.

There is a slight change to the English section.

On TEAS 6, there was a sub-category of questions within the English section referred to as “Vocabulary Acquisition”. Vocabulary Acquisition covered information such as root words, suffixes, and prefixes. On TEAS 7, vocabulary acquisition has been updated to “using language and vocabulary to express ideas in writing”. (source, ATI Testing).

The new sub-category will test a test taker’s ability to answer questions correctly by utilizing context clues to determine the meaning of a word based on its prefix, suffix, or root word. Additionally, these questions will test a test taker’s understanding of the writing process as it relates to communicating an idea.

There are a little fewer numbers and algebra questions and more measurements and data questions on the math section.

The math section consists of 18 numbers and algebra questions and 16 measurement and data questions. This means that you will see fewer questions on fractions, decimals, order of operations, and instead, you’ll see more word problems, interpreting graphs, and conversion questions. Here are a few example math questions:

Numbers and Algebra Questions:

Change 0.375 to a fraction. Simplify completely.

What is 15% of 64?

Change 2.5 to a fraction. Simplify completely.

Measurement & Data Questions:

The level of a river during a flood was 39.45 feet. After a week, the water level declined to 18.97 feet. What was the amount of decrease in feet?

If 1 out of every 250 people will contract a certain disease, what percent of people will contract it?

Convert 0.75 kilograms to grams.

There are 170 questions on the TEAS 7, but 20 of those questions are unscored.

“Unscored” test questions appear in each section of the test. These are considered “pretest questions” and thus are not scored and do not count towards your final TEAS score. While you are taking the test, you will not know which questions are scored and unscored.

The last thing that is important to know about the TEAS 7 is that you shouldn’t panic.

For the most part, TEAS 6 and TEAS 7 are actually pretty similar. The TEAS 7 is not radically different, however, it is updated from the TEAS 6. There is no foreign out of left field topic being added to any section, the math, reading, vocabulary, and even science are generally the same.

In the science section for example, the main difference is the ratio of questions with slight variations in how much A&P there is compared to before. There was always biology, A&P, and a bit of chemistry on TEAS 6, now on TEAS 7 there are just more questions on those topics and less A&P.
