The PSAT will have reading passages and each passage has a set of multiple choice questions to answer. There are 47 questions in total and you have 60 minutes for this section of the test. Each passage is similar in length, about three to five paragraphs and will have roughly 500-700 words.

Examples of the types of passages and what kind of content you might see in the passages are:

  • Fictional passage from a story
  • Passage from humanities topics such as psychology, sociology, or economics.
  • Passages about foundational scientific concepts related to earth science, biology, or chemistry.
  • Social studies or governmental passages including speeches, excerpts from founding documents, or a news article.

How many reading passages are on PSAT?

In total there are 5 passages with four being individual stand alone passages and one set of passages to be evaluated as a set.

How to prepare for PSAT reading?

If you’re taking the PSAT, it’s important to prepare so you can do your best on the test. Here are a few tips on how to prepare for the reading section of the PSAT:

First, take a diagnostic PSAT reading practice test. This will give you an idea of what topics you need to focus on.

Next, review your scores and study the topics you scored lowest in consistently. Make sure you understand these concepts before moving on.

It can help to practice with passages that are a level or two higher than what you are used to. For example, you’re studying for the PSAT/NMSQT, start reading texts aimed for 11th and 12th graders. This will help get comfortable with the level of difficulty they can expect on the test.

Since the reading section is timed, you’ll want to make sure to practice with timed PSAT reading practice tests. It’s important to get familiar with the allotted time to make sure you don’t leave any questions unanswered, although they won’t be counted against you, it’s better to complete all of the questions given.

Finally, use study materials that align with your child’s learning style.

If they’re more visual learners, look for PSAT online courses with color graphics and educational videos. If they’re auditory learners, consider finding audio recordings of practice tests or video lessons. By using materials that fit their learning style, you’ll help them prepare more effectively for the PSAT reading section.

How can I improve my PSAT reading comprehension?

The PSAT reading section can be daunting, but there are steps you can take to prepare.

First, take practice tests that are timed and include realistic passages and questions. This will help you get used to the pacing of the test.

Second, actively read as much as possible. Read every piece of content as if you had to answer important questions about it. This will help improve your comprehension skills.

Finally, take this section seriously. It is a good indicator of how you will do on the SAT reading section.

Do colleges look at PSAT?

Colleges and universities primarily review SAT or ACT scores as part of their admissions process. PSAT scores are not considered for admissions.

However, PSAT scores can be indicative of how well a student will do on the ACT or SAT so they are still important in the planning stages of applying to college. PSAT scores, letters of reference, and extracurricular activities are all things college can review and consider as part of their decision. They may not be the most important factor, but they can help give you an edge.
