How hard is the science HiSET test?

The HiSET science section consists of multiple science categories which include life science, physical science, and earth science. There are 60 questions that must be completed in 80 minutes.

Students will need to interpret, analyze and evaluate information. Much like any other section of the HiSET, the information you are tested on is vast and there is just over one minute minute per question.

For life science questions, students will be asked about organisms, their environments and their life cycles. Additional questions will be based on understanding the human body and its functions such as cells, biomolecules, chromosomes, and DNA. Students should also expect to answer questions about structure and function in living systems such as humans, animals, and plants.

For physical science questions, students will be asked about physical properties such as color, temperature, volume or mass. Students will also have to answer questions regarding basic chemistry and chemical reactions.

Students should also be prepared to answer questions on the principles of matter and atomic structure. Additional concepts that may appear in physical science topics may be regarding motion of objects, light, heat, magnetism, and electricity.

The Earth science questions will require students to answer questions about earth materials, Earth’s natural occurring processes, structure, time, and weather related events such as flooding or hurricanes. Students may encounter questions on the Earth’s position in the universe and the solar system. In addition, students may be asked questions about basic astronomy such as stars, the Sun, and the solar system as a whole.

The science section can be overwhelming just because of the diversity in topics from chemistry to scientific reasoning. The best way to approach studying for the HiSET science section is to take a HiSET science practice test.

The science practice test will test students on all of the need to know topics in a realistic format. At the end of the HiSET practice test, there will be a diagnostic report that outlines what topics the student got the highest and lowest percentage of questions correct. Students should focus on the areas where they got the lowest scores as a starting point.
