Individual Rights and Civic Responsibilities

Civil Liberties and Civic Responsibilities

The rights that the Constitution and the Bill of Rights grant U.S. citizens are known as civil liberties or personal freedoms. Civil liberties are protections against government actions. For example, people can practice their religion without government interference.

There are certain expectations of U.S. citizens known as civic responsibilities. The word responsibility can also mean duty. When every person keeps up with each of these responsibilities, the democratic system functions well. Civic responsibilities/duties include the following:

  • Supporting and defending the Constitution
  • Voting
  • Staying educated on current issues
  • Respecting the rights, beliefs, and opinions of others
  • Paying taxes
  • Serving as a witness in court
  • Performing jury duty
  • Obeying laws
  • Serving on government boards and committees
