The United States is a constitutional democracy and a representative democracy.
The U.S. Constitution is the basis of American government and law and incorporates many of the country’s founding principles, such as separation of powers, checks and balances, and federalism.
Colonists in what is now the United States revolted against British rule because they felt they were not represented in the government.
Delegates from the newly formed United States first wrote the Articles of Confederation as their constitution and later replaced it with the U.S. Constitution.
Democracy is not the only type of government. Other types include oligarchies, monarchies, and dictatorships.
