Types of Governments

Letā€™s Review!

  • The United States is a constitutional democracy and a representative democracy.
  • The U.S. Constitution is the basis of American government and law and incorporates many of the countryā€™s founding principles, such as separation of powers, checks and balances, and federalism.
  • Colonists in what is now the United States revolted against British rule because they felt they were not represented in the government.
  • Delegates from the newly formed United States first wrote the Articles of Confederation as their constitution and later replaced it with the U.S. Constitution.
  • Democracy is not the only type of government. Other types include oligarchies, monarchies, and dictatorships.
