- Ties between Britain and the United States weakened because the colonists wanted control over their own affairs.
- Victory in the Revolutionary War was made possible through help from other European powers, especially the French.
- The Declaration of Independence established a number of important principles, including the principle of equality among citizens (although, at the time, “citizens” only included white male landowners).
- The Constitution was established to create a stronger government after the Articles of Confederation.
- Americans were motivated to expand westward to claim more land.
- The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States and made westward expansion possible.
- The War of 1812 won the United States respect from Britain and other European powers.
- The Industrial Revolution transformed parts of the Northeast into manufacturing-heavy areas.
- Even the South, which remained rural, was shaped by the Industrial Revolution.
