How do you pass the math HiSET?
Passing the HiSET math test is achievable for every student with enough preparation, studying and practice. With math, repetition is key and it’s all about how much practice a student can fit in before the test date, the key is to practice, practice, practice.
The best thing to do is to start with a HiSET math practice test with answers. It’s important to take a realistic and complete practice test and review the diagnostic results.
The results will give you an overall score from 0-100% and a percentage score for each question that you answered correctly for each subtopic within the math section.
Once you know your weakest topics you should plan to focus your study time reviewing lessons and study using study materials that align with your learning style. So for example if you are a visual learner you’ll want to watch or listen to video lessons, if you prefer to read then you’ll want something with written lessons.
Students should plan to study the concepts they are weak in at least once a week. Each study session should be focused on 1 topic, last 45-60 minutes, and include answering practice questions from a test bank or practice test to get practice on the math skills right away.
After studying your weak areas you can then go back and retake a math practice test and see what areas have improved and what areas need more studying. This process should be repeated for as long as needed.

What kind of math is on the HiSET test?
The math section of the HiSET consists of four categories listed below along with the percentage of questions from each section on the test:
- Numbers and Operations on Numbers (19%)
- Measurement/Geometry (18%)
- Data Analysis/Probability/Statistics (18%)
- Algebraic Concepts (45%)
Students should be prepared to demonstrate an understanding of mathematical concepts and procedures, analyzing and interpreting information, synthesizing data, and solving problems.
Numbers and Operations
Requires you to answer questions which may include using properties of operations with real numbers, including rational and irrational numbers.
You may also be asked questions that require you to rewrite expressions involving radicals and rational exponents using the properties of exponents.
You will want to be familiar with solving problems involving numbers written in scientific notation as well as being able to reason quantitatively and use units to solve problems.
Lastly you’ll see multistep real-world and mathematical problems involving rational numbers and irrational numbers including proportional relationships.

Is the HiSET math test hard?
All of the math being tested on the HiSET math section is high school math. The test is not necessarily difficult, but it depends how familiar the test taker is with these math concepts.
You actually don’t need a calculator to solve any of the questions on the test, however if you request a calculator, the test center is required to provide access to one of the following: four-function or scientific calculator.
While some of the math such as basic addition and subtraction comes easy to most, it is not uncommon for people to need refreshers on algebra, geometry, and statistics.
The best way to make the HiSET math test less hard is to take as many practice tests as possible and continue studying the weak areas.

The HiSET math test requires test takers to have a multitude of skills. Test takers will need to solve problems using operations, solving word problems, comprehending data in graphics, solving by applying geometry formulas, solving linear equations, solving quadratic equations, and algebraic equations.
