What is a good score on a HSPT practice test?
The HSPT is scored by schools to evaluate scholarship eligibility, course placement, and admissions. The HSPT scoring interpretation varies from school to school. Unlike standardized testing like the SAT or PSAT, each school uses different scaling systems to evaluate the weight and placement of a score. However, the way the test is scored is the same.
The test generates a raw score which is the number of questions answered correctly which are then standardized and given a score from 200-800. Those scores are then grouped into a national percentile based on the national data of test takers. Percentiles are 1% to top 99%.
Any score above 600 can be considered above average and roughly would place a student in the 80th percentile. However each school has a different metric for what score they are looking to see for any student looking to gain admission.
The three composite scores are total cognitive skills, basic skills, and battery composite. Last year, the average HSPT score was 500 (out of 800).
Does the HSPT have an essay?
Unlike the SSAT, the HSPT does not have an essay portion on the exam. Instead, the HSPT comprises five test sections which are multiple choice questions. The five subtests of the HSPT are language skills, mathematics, reading, quantitative, and verbal.
While the HSPT may not test students directly on their writing skills through application, they will be tested on their understanding of standard English, conventions of English, comprehension, parts of speech, and more.
