What kind of math is on the HSPT?

The HSPT math section includes 64 questions that must be completed in 45 minutes. The HPST math section primarily contains math that is related to problem solving skills and the understanding of math concepts.

Here are a few examples of the kind of math that that is on the HSPT:

Questions on percentages such as “If a shirt costs $100 and now the shirt costs $45, what is the discount?”

Questions on conversions such as “If a recipe calls for 2 cups of water, how many quarts are needed if you want to double the recipe?”

Questions require a simple algebra equation such as “If you’re driving 22 miles per 15 minutes, how many miles will you drive in one hour?”

The best way to prepare for the math section is by taking an HSPT math practice test to determine your weakest topics within each section. You can take an HSPT free math practice to get a better feel for what kind of math is on the HSPT.

At the end of the HSPT math practice test you will receive a score report that will break down each question by the topic it relates to which is where you determine your strengths and weaknesses. What topics are in the math subject for HSPT?

The math section of the HSPT has algebraic equations and concepts, arithmetic, and geometry.

For the arithmetic questions, students should be able to answer questions about addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, order of operations, percentages, ratios, proportions, and a number line or numerical values.

For the geometry questions, students should be able to answer questions including calculating the area and volume of 2D and 3D shapes, angles, triangles, circles, and perimeter.

For the algebra math HSPT questions, students should be prepared to answer questions including one-step linear equations, two-step linear equations, equations with one and multiple variations, and absolute values.

Since students are only allowed to take the HSPT test once, it’s important to take HSPT practice tests to prepare in advance and study effectively. You can learn more about the HSPT math section here. 

Are you allowed to use a calculator on the HSPT?

Calculators are not allowed to be used on the HSPT. Accommodations can be made for students with disabilities with the school.
